Uzbekistan has a significant step by passing a bill aimed at enhancing female representation in parliamentary candidate nominations by political parties.
During the parliamentary session on October 31, the Oliy Majlis reviewed the draft legislation titled "Amendments to the Electoral Code of the Republic of Uzbekistan" in its first reading.
The proposed changes to Articles 70 and 91 of the Electoral Code seek to raise the minimum percentage of women in political party nominations for parliamentary seats from 30% to 40% of the total candidates.
This pivotal bill received approval from the parliamentary deputies during the session. The enactment of this legislation is expected to not only bolster the influence of women in governing both society and the state but also elevate their political engagement.
Earlier, Daryo reported that a working group, led by Deputy Prime Minister Zulayho Mahkamova of Uzbekistan, conducted a study focusing on women's issues in the region. Their mission involved strengthening family values, preventing conflicts among women, and promoting successful experiences. They visited the Beruni district of Karakalpakstan to learn about local efforts and discuss solutions.
The delegation also explored women's employment, particularly at "Rayhon Apparel," a company empowering local women. They observed innovative approaches to farming and discussed strategies to prevent family disputes and divorce. The government is committed to addressing women's challenges in various districts across the region. Deputy Prime Minister Mahkamova emphasized the importance of women's happiness for family and societal well-being.
