The body of the final miner, who tragically lost their life in the accident at the Kostenko mine in Kazakhstan's Karaganda region, has been discovered. The total number of casualties has now risen to 46 individuals, as confirmed by Syrym Sharipkhanov, the head of Kazakhstan's Ministry of Emergency Situations, in a report by Tengrinews.
Sharipkhanov stated, "During the extensive search and rescue operations, the bodies of 45 miners were found, along with remains believed to belong to the 46th victim. Currently, 40 individuals have been positively identified, while six people remain unaccounted for. Necessary expertise is underway to establish their identities." He further emphasized that DNA testing is essential for precise identification.
On the evening of October 29, the bodies of 45 miners had been located, and it was reported that rescue teams were continuing their efforts to locate the remaining worker.
A devastating methane explosion rocked the Kostenko mine on the morning of October 28. At the time of the incident, 252 people were inside the mine, with 205 miners successfully emerging from the mine themselves, while 18 of them sought medical attention. The nation declared a period of mourning in response to the tragedy.
Following the accident, a pre-trial investigation was initiated in Kazakhstan for violations of safety regulations in mining and construction operations. A government commission was formed to comprehensively examine the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Additionally, President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev of Kazakhstan decided to replace the management of ArcelorMittal Temirtau (AMT), the company that owns the mine, in the aftermath of the catastrophe.
