According to The Paper, the police in Zhangjiang conducted an operation to rescue over a thousand cats that were intended for slaughter.

A group of animal rights activists discovered numerous wooden crates filled with cats near a local cemetery. They monitored the crates for six days until a truck arrived at the cemetery to load the animals. As soon as this happened, they alerted the police.
Authorities found a multitude of cat carcasses at the slaughterhouse where the truck was headed. According to the activists, the wrongdoers captured stray cats, then sold their meat as pork or lamb, making $15 to $20 for each carcass. This means that the culprits could have earned over $20,000 from this batch of cats.
According to the activists, this is not the first such case in China. The rescued cats have been sent to a local shelter.
