The city of Nukus, nestled in the heart of Karakalpakstan, hosted an exciting and eco-friendly event on October 23. Together with the Ministry of Preschool and School Education of the Republic of Uzbekistan, the Preschool Education Agency, the Office of the Coordinator of Projects of the OSCE in Uzbekistan, the Ministry of Youth Policy and Sports of the Republic of Uzbekistan, and the Cycling Federation, an annual children's bicycle marathon took place. This event was the fourth of its kind, aimed at promoting environmental awareness, physical fitness, and responsible behavior among young children.
The government of the Republic of Uzbekistan has been consistently focusing on engaging children and teenagers in environmental education and physical activities. In 2021, a significant project was launched to introduce environmental education and off-road driving techniques into the preschool education system, contributing to the increase of children's knowledge in these areas.
The initiative was conducted in four key stages:
- Project 1 (June 1, 2021): The first children's bicycle marathon took place in the central eco-park of Tashkent city, with the enthusiastic participation of 13 state preschool education institutions, collectively contributing 400 balance bikes.
- Project 2 (May 31, 2022): In the city of Samarkand, 500 balance bikes were presented to 20 state pre-school educational organizations.
- Project 3 (May 31, 2023): As part of this stage, 500 balance bikes were provided to 18 pilot public preschool educational institutions in Khiva.
- Project 4 (October 23, 2023): The fourth stage of the project unfolded in Nukus, Republic of Karakalpakstan, involving 400 balance bikes distributed among 20 pilot public preschool educational organizations in the city.
In total, these four projects have led to the distribution of 1,800 balance bikes to preschool education organizations in Tashkent, Samarkand, Khiva, and Nukus city of Karakalpakstan.
The primary objective of the children's bicycle marathon is to cultivate sustainable skills related to environmental protection and the use of eco-friendly transport. Additionally, it aims to popularize cycling among preschool children, promote a healthy lifestyle, and instill a culture of responsible behavior, emphasizing compliance with traffic safety rules.
The young participants in the bicycle marathon were recognized for their efforts with commemorative medals and special gifts. An entertaining program featured various contests and games to keep the children engaged and excited.
This initiative was made possible through the collaborative efforts of several entities, including the Preschool Education Agency under the Ministry of Preschool and School Education of the Republic of Uzbekistan, the Ministry of Youth Policy and Sports of the Republic of Uzbekistan, the Cycling Federation of the Republic of Uzbekistan, and the Coordinator of the Representative Office of the European Security and Cooperation Organization in Uzbekistan. These organizations have joined forces to execute the project's main objectives and have successfully hosted this event for the fourth consecutive year.
The bicycle marathon not only contributes to the physical well-being of the children but also ensures they grow up with a heightened sense of environmental responsibility.
