Uzbekistan, a nation with substantial gas reserves, is actively pursuing new projects and technologies to enhance its natural gas production. The country has forged a partnership with Schlumberger, a leading U.S.-based global technology company, to explore opportunities for optimizing gas production on Uzbekistan's gas fields.
Uzbekistan-Schlumberger Collaboration
Uzbekistan's state-owned oil and gas company, Uzbekneftegaz, recently engaged in discussions with representatives from Schlumberger Oilfield Eastern in Uzbekistan. The primary focus of these discussions was centered around the development and maintenance of a medium- and long-term program designed to increase the efficiency of exploration and natural gas production. Operating under a long-term agreement, Schlumberger presented proposals and deliberated on the essential actions required for the successful execution of the project.
A pivotal aspect of this collaborative endeavor is the formation of a joint working group, comprising specialists from both companies. This team's core mission will revolve around the study of available information pertaining to gas deposits and prospective areas within Uzbekneftegaz's portfolio. They will work in tandem to compile and oversee the implementation of geological and technical measures aimed at augmenting natural gas production.
The collaboration between Uzbekistan and Schlumberger is a significant step, aligning with the agreements established in the "Roadmap of Mutual Understanding" and the "Roadmap for the Development of Cooperation." These agreements were inked during the State visit of the President of Uzbekistan to the United States, highlighting the commitment to fostering cooperation in the energy sector.
Uzbekistan's Gas Production Statistics
Uzbekistan has been actively working to optimize its gas production. As of August 2023, the country has produced 31.39 bn cubic meters of gas. While this represents a substantial volume, it is important to note that it reflects a 9.4% decrease compared to the same period in the previous year.
maRegional Energy Securit
In an effort to bolster energy security and meet the country's gas demand, Uzbekistan recently launched a strategic initiative. On October 7, 2023, Presidents of Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, and Russia inaugurated Russian gas supplies to Uzbekistan. This gas transportation corridor is of considerable importance for Uzbekistan's energy security.
Uzbekistan's President, Shavkat Mirziyoyev, highlighted the strategic value of this launch. He stated that this development not only enhances energy security but also ensures a consistent supply of gas for economic sectors and the population. The gas supplies from Russia, facilitated by the transportation corridor, play a pivotal role in addressing the nation's energy needs.
Additionally, Gazprom, Russia's energy giant, has played a vital role in ensuring a smooth supply of natural gas to Uzbekistan. The company signed an agreement with Kazakhstan's QazaqGaz to provide transportation services for Russian natural gas through Kazakhstan to consumers in Uzbekistan. This two-year agreement outlines a significant supply volume of 9 mn cubic meters per day, translating to nearly 2.8 bn cubic meters annually.
