During the Belt and Road Forum in Beijing, Chinese leader Xi Jinping and Russian President Putin discussed the conflict in the Middle East and the situation in Ukraine. Putin stated that their shared concerns have brought the two countries closer together.
The conflict between Israel and Hamas was a key topic at the forum, with the United States showing strong support for Israel while China and Russia called for a ceasefire. In his speech, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres urged for an immediate humanitarian ceasefire.
The forum also highlighted the strong political trust between Xi and Putin, with Putin being the guest of honour and the two leaders holding three hours of bilateral talks. Both leaders praised China's Belt and Road Initiative, with Putin calling it a way to establish a fairer, multi-polar world and Xi presenting it as an alternative development model.
Xi used the forum to project China's ambitions to reshape the global world order and promote multilateral cooperation. However, this comes at a time when China is facing challenges at home, including a slowing economy and high unemployment.
More than 150 countries have cooperated on the Belt and Road Initiative, which has mobilized up to a tn dollars in investments. However, it has faced criticism for its high costs and environmental impact. Xi brushed aside these criticisms and proposed an eight-part action plan for the initiative, including the full removal of restrictions on foreign investment in Chinese manufacturing.
