Hundreds of Palestinians lost their lives or were wounded as a result of an Israeli airstrike on the Al-Ahli Hospital in Gaza on the evening of October 17. The hospital's church had been providing shelter to Palestinians who had fled their homes due to Israeli attacks.
According to the Gaza Ministry of Health, the death toll ranges from 200 to 300 individuals. Subsequent reports suggested over 500 casualties, with Al-Arabiya reporting that the number had exceeded 800. The ministry also stated that hundreds of people were trapped under the rubble. There is no precise official data on the casualties. Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas declared a three-day mourning period in response to the attack on Al-Ahli Hospital.
Media outlets published photos depicting the aftermath of the explosion at the hospital.
The attack on Al-Ahli Hospital was condemned by Charles Michel of the League of Arab States, the World Health Organization, and the European Union. Russia and the United Arab Emirates requested an emergency meeting of the United Nations Security Council on October 18 in response to the hospital attack.
The Israeli military claims that it did not target the hospital in the Gaza Strip. According to Israeli military sources, a misfire of a rocket by the Islamic Jihad group resulted in an explosion near Al-Ahli Hospital.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated that "Palestinian militants" had attacked the hospital. "The world must know: a hospital in the Gaza Strip was attacked by barbaric terrorists, not Israel. Those who callously killed our children also killed their own children," she wrote on Twitter.
