As the 25th UNWTO General Assembly in Samarkand continues, government representatives unveiled a $269 mn project for developing the Chimgan ski resort located just 98 km from the capital city Tashkent.
The proposal includes three cable stations, gondola and pendulum-style cable cars, chair lifts and an area for hotels, restaurants, and retail outlets. Ski resort Chimgan, known locally as ‘Chimyon’, currently lacks the infrastructure to attract a substantial international crowd. Still, the project hopes to turn Chimgan Resort into a serious contender for the best ski resort in Central Asia.
With a total ski slope length of 20 km and the ability to provide 6,000 tourist beds, the project would increase competition in the area, especially with the more established ski resort of Amirsoy situated less than 8 km away.
At a height of 3309m, the summit will be the highest of any Central Asian resort which is reachable by cable car. The project also includes 20 winter activities such as tubing, and zip-lining.
Nick Russill, ski resort expert from Snow-Forecast.com said of Uzbekistan:
Uzbekistan's ski season, running from December to April, beckons skiers and snowboarders to explore Amirsoy and Chimgan resorts. Nestled amidst the Tian Shan Mountains, these high-altitude destinations (1,630 to 2,290 meters) boast an annual snowfall of approximately 1.5 meters, offering ideal conditions for winter sports enthusiasts.
As word spreads about the stunning landscapes, well-groomed slopes, and growing network of amenities, these Uzbek ski resorts are steadily gaining popularity among local and international thrill-seekers, making them sought-after winter destinations in Central Asia.
Jakhongir Samatov, a spokesperson for the project, added that investment opportunities into accommodation in the Chimgan area would open in the near future. He also said that the plans involved an extensive beginner slope to attract a larger crowd, including Uzbek families with little skiing and snowboarding experience.
