During the 25th session of the United Nations World Tourism Organization's (UNWTO) General Assembly, the awards ceremony for the "Best Tourist Villages" will be hosted at the Silk Road Samarkand tourist complex.
The UNWTO annually acknowledges outstanding rural tourist destinations that exhibit a strong commitment to holistic sustainable development, encompassing economic, social, and environmental aspects, while also emphasizing the preservation and promotion of local traditions and values. This recognition aims to position rural tourism as a catalyst for societal progress and well-being.
Mansur Melikov, who leads the Office of the Committee on Tourism, explained that the "Best Tourist Village" category was introduced by UNWTO in 2021 to highlight not only developed areas but also settlements that have conserved their cultural heritage and actively promote their traditions.
Uzbekistan has nominated five villages for the "Best Tourist Village" category: Konigil in the Samarkand region, Sentob in the Navoi region, Sangardak in the Surkhandarya region, Uhum in the Jizzakh region, and Avval in the Fergana region.
This year marks the third edition of the "Best Tourist Villages" Awards Ceremony. Similar to previous occasions, the event will convene prominent representatives from member states acknowledged this year, along with representatives from rural communities.
