On October 17, 2023, President Shavkat Mirziyoyev of Uzbekistan held discussions with President Xi Jinping of the People's Republic of China, addressing pertinent issues in the ongoing strengthening of their countries' friendship and comprehensive strategic partnership.
The meeting commenced with President Mirziyoyev expressing his appreciation for the invitation and warm reception from his Chinese counterpart. He extended his congratulations to President Xi Jinping on the anniversary of China's founding and the decade milestone of the "One Place, One Road" initiative.
President Mirziyoyev emphasized the significance of the "Makon va Yol" initiative as an essential platform for cooperation and noted the symbolic launch of President Xi Jinping's "Green Silk Road" initiative in Uzbekistan in 2016.
Both leaders underscored Uzbekistan's determination to enhance its multilateral relations with China, including the continued implementation of a five-year program aimed at advancing their comprehensive strategic partnership.
Trade, economic, and investment cooperation between the two nations has been growing rapidly. Chinese investments in Uzbekistan have surged fivefold in recent years, leading to a threefold increase in the number of joint ventures. Trade between the countries has increased by 36% since the start of the year, with prospects of exceeding $10bn by year-end. Both leaders concurred on the potential to increase trade to $20bn in the next five years.
The leaders agreed to focus on expanding high-tech projects, fostering cooperation in high-value product manufacturing, and commended cooperation with Chinese banks and the Silk Road Fund.
Interregional relations have been activated, with visits by delegations from various Chinese provinces. Both leaders highlighted the exchange of experiences and practical collaboration in poverty alleviation.
Cooperation in culture, education, and tourism has intensified. Events including an Uzbekistan presentation at the National Silk Museum in Hangzhou and an exhibition of Uzbekistan's historical heritage at the "Gugun" palace museum in Beijing have taken place. Upcoming initiatives include the Days of Chinese Culture in Uzbekistan and the Days of Uzbekistan Culture in China.
The interest in learning the Chinese language is on the rise, particularly among young people. Plans are underway to expand Chinese language teaching and foster exchanges among young scientists, including the establishment of branches of China's Xinhua University and Peking University in Tashkent.
Both leaders exchanged views on regional and international political matters, reaffirming their commitment to the "One China" policy and the fight against the "three evil forces." An agreement was reached to adopt a "roadmap" for implementing initiatives.
The meeting was characterized by a reliable, open, and friendly spirit, reflecting the ongoing strengthening of the strategic partnership between Uzbekistan and China.
