Halloween Tragedy in South Korea 2022
In 2022, South Korea bore witness to a tragic incident on Halloween night, one that shook the nation. The police confirmed that they received a call on the national emergency helpline at 18:34 local time, several hours before the fatal stampede occurred, resulting in the loss of 156 lives and leaving 152 individuals injured.
The caller reported being on the main street of Itaewon, near the "Hamilton" hotel, describing a hazardous situation marked by overcrowding. They expressed concerns over the narrow alleyway becoming perilous as people ascended and descended without the means to safely move about. They issued a warning about the potential for a stampede and implored the police to take control of the situation.
Over the next three and a half hours, the police received at least ten more calls, all of which underscored the seriousness of the situation.
South Korea's Chief of Police acknowledged the inadequate and disappointing response of law enforcement to the Itaewon stampede. This marked the first instance in which authorities admitted their inability to prevent such an incident.
The head of South Korea's National Police Agency, Yun Hi-Gyun, expressed "unlimited responsibility for public safety" in light of the tragedy and pledged a thorough investigation.
The Minister of the Interior of South Korea, Lee Sang-Min, also extended apologies for the incident. The stampede occurred on a Saturday evening in Seoul's Itaewon district, known for its nightlife, clubs, restaurants, and cafes. This event represented the first large-scale celebration without mask mandates since the relaxation of COVID-19 restrictions.
Most of the victims were young, including minors, with an average age of around 20. Numerous calls were made to the police, warning of the severity of the situation, but the response was deemed inadequate.
