A series of powerful earthquakes in Afghanistan has resulted in a tragic toll, with over 2,000 fatalities and more than 9,000 individuals injured, the Taliban administration announced on Sunday, October 8.
As per the report, five quakes struck near the city of Herat, located 35 km (20 miles) northwest of the epicenter, including one measuring 6.3 magnitude, as reported by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS).
The initial death toll of 500, stated by a Red Crescent spokesperson on October 8 morning, quickly rose due to the chaotic situation, and it was 16 on October 7 night. Mullah Janan Sayeeq, spokesperson for the Ministry of Disasters, conveyed that 2,053 people lost their lives, 9,240 sustained injuries, and 1,329 houses were either damaged or completely destroyed.
Hospitals received over 200 deceased individuals, with a Herat health department official, Dr. Danish, revealing that a majority of them were women and children. The aftermath of the quakes induced panic among Herat's residents, who sought refuge on the streets, and reported ongoing aftershocks heightened their unease.
