Turkmen President Serdar Berdimuhamedov has instructed to keep the cotton harvest under strict control as soon as possible and without losses, local TV channel Altyn Asyr reports. This matter was deliberated during a work meeting attended by Deputy Prime Minister Tangryguly Atakhallyev, who oversees agro-industry, and regional administration leaders.
"On the cotton fields of the region the harvesting season continues. In particular, defoliation is carried out for more productive work of combines. Timely settlements with producers are made for the raw cotton handed over to the state."
Turkmenistan's Agriculture Ministry has announced plans to harvest 1.25mn tonnes of cotton from 580,000 hectares of land this year.
Most of the raw material is used to produce textiles, which have become "Turkmenistan's trademark". These products are ordered by a number of Western brands and distributed by the global retail chain WalMart.
Prices for these goods are determined at auctions held by the State Commodity Exchange of Turkmenistan in accordance with the quotes of the Liverpool Cotton Agency.
