Turkish Ambassador to Turkmenistan Ahmet Demirok has been appointed. The corresponding decree was signed by the head of the Turkish Foreign Ministry.
The 53-year-old diplomat has headed his country's diplomatic mission in Eritrea since 15 August 2021. He has worked in the Turkish Foreign Ministry since 1993 and has held various posts in Greece, Australia, Serbia, Austria, Qatar and the UK.
Turkey is one of Turkmenistan's largest trading partners. Some 600 Turkish companies are registered in the local market, operating in the fields of trade, construction, energy, transport, communications and textiles.
According to the Turkish Ministry of Trade, the volume of construction projects carried out in the Central Asian country between 1972 and July 2023 exceeded $50.8bn. Last year, trade turnover between Türkiye and Turkmenistan totalled $2.06bn, an increase of 21.8% over the previous year.
The energy issue is expected to be discussed during Turkmen President Serdar Berdimuhamedov's planned official visit to Türkiye.
Experts told Daryo that a 300-km pipeline across the Caspian Sea could best link Turkmenistan to the Southern Gas Corridor (SGC), through which Azerbaijan already supplies gas to Europe via Türkiye.
"This project could significantly increase the competitiveness of the SGC and contribute significantly to the creation of a transnational gas hub in Thrace, Türkiye."
