The United Nations has issued a call for countries in the region surrounding Afghanistan to join efforts in pressuring the Taliban to uphold women's rights. UN Deputy Secretary-General Amina Mohammed emphasized the importance of regional cooperation in advocating for women's rights and the restoration of their freedoms, Sputnik Aghanistan reported.
UN's Message
During a press conference held at the United Nations Headquarters, Deputy Secretary-General Amina Mohammed underscored that the countries neighboring Afghanistan are integral members of the global community. Their active participation in pressuring the Taliban is seen as vital for the restoration of women's rights to the level they enjoyed during the previous republic.
Ms. Mohammed's statement aligns with the stance taken by the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), which has been actively engaging with Afghanistan through delegations to discuss the situation of women in the country. The OIC's involvement highlights the shared concern within the Muslim world regarding the status of women in Afghanistan.
Offer of Recognition in Exchange for Women's Rights
During her recent visit to Afghanistan, Amina Mohammed made an unprecedented offer to the Taliban. She proposed that the international community would consider recognizing their authority if they were willing to lift the restrictions imposed on women's rights. This proposal signifies the international community's commitment to advancing women's rights in Afghanistan and highlights the potential diplomatic leverage that recognition could provide.
However, not all nations share the same viewpoint on this matter. Russia's Special Representative for Afghanistan, Zamir Kabulov, expressed a differing opinion. He characterized the issue of women's rights as an internal matter for Afghanistan and suggested that guidance on this matter could come from states that follow Sharia law, akin to the Taliban. Despite this view, Kabulov subjectively criticized the restrictions imposed by the Taliban as "stupid."
