The Customs Committee in the Sergeli district of Tashkent has officially confirmed that the recent warehouse fire in the area does not fall under the jurisdiction of customs authorities.
The fire, which broke out at a warehouse owned by Inter Logistics, has resulted in extensive damage to public utilities related to warehouse storage. While a portion of the warehouse is designated for storage purposes, it is primarily classified as a warehouse and logistics facility.
Husan Tangriyev, the chief inspector of the Customs Committee's press service, shed light on the situation. The warehouse storage facility, in this case, is subject to licensing for entrepreneurs. The owner of the warehouse stores goods imported to Uzbekistan by other entrepreneurs, subject to official certification of the warehouse, until the customs clearance of the goods, especially in the absence of 'customs clearance. While globally such facilities are often referred to as customs warehouses, they are not officially considered part of the customs authorities' buildings and structures.
In the realm of international commerce, these specialized storage facilities are commonly known as customs warehouses. Uzbekistan boasts a thriving network of over 400 officially licensed warehouse storage facilities, a testament to its commitment to facilitating seamless trade and logistics.
The Ministry of Health has reported that a total of 163 people were injured in the incident, with one teenager tragically losing their life as a result of the fire.
The fire engulfed a vast 18.4-hectare warehouse property owned by Inter Logistics, affecting approximately 10,000 square meters of warehouse space. In response to the situation, a criminal case was initiated by the Investigative Department of the Ministry of Internal Affairs under Article 259 of the Criminal Code, citing a violation of fire safety regulations, particularly under part 2, clauses "a" and "b."
To investigate the serious incident, mitigate the consequences, and provide assistance to those affected, a government commission has been established in accordance with the president's directive.
Nevertheless, despite the unprecedented tragedy, the government has unequivocally pledged to ensure full and fair compensation for every individual affected by the devastating blast.
