In a recent meeting on the sidelines of the 78th session of the United Nations General Assembly, Kyrgyzstan's Foreign Affairs Minister, Jeenbek Kulubaev, and Donald Lu, the Assistant Secretary of State for South and Central Asian Affairs of the United States, discussed Kyrgyzstan's eagerness to engage with American companies in various sectors. The Kyrgyz Ministry of Foreign Affairs reported that the meeting aimed to explore opportunities for collaboration, especially in fields like green economy, energy, transport infrastructure, digitalization, and education.
Kulubaev affirmed Kyrgyzstan's keen interest in leveraging U.S. expertise and technology to advance these critical sectors. He emphasized that Kyrgyzstan views American businesses as potential partners in fostering economic development and technological advancement within the nation.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Kyrgyz Republic further noted that the discussions between the two officials encompassed the broader aspects of bilateral relations between Kyrgyzstan and the United States. They also touched upon the prospects of strengthening cooperation through the C5+1 regional platform, which includes Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, and the United States.
The relationship between Kyrgyzstan and the United States has seen fluctuations in recent years. In 2015, the agreement between the two governments on cooperation was denounced, primarily at the behest of former Kyrgyz head of state, Almazbek Atambayev. This agreement encompassed humanitarian aid, economic and technical assistance to Kyrgyzstan. Under its provisions, all supplies related to U.S. assistance programs were exempt from taxes and customs duties. Additionally, U.S. civilian and military personnel working in the country enjoyed diplomatic status during their tenure.
The recent discussions between Minister Kulubaev and Assistant Secretary Lu signify Kyrgyzstan's desire to rekindle a mutually beneficial relationship with the United States, one that could potentially bring innovative solutions and investments into the country's key sectors. While the path forward is yet to be determined, both nations seem open to exploring opportunities for collaboration and revitalizing their diplomatic ties.
