Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is scheduled to visit Ottawa later this week, marking his first visit to Canada since Russia's invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.
According to sources, Zelenskyy will address Parliament on September 22 before traveling to Toronto, although specific details have yet to be officially disclosed. This visit follows his recent United States trip and participation in the ongoing United Nations General Assembly. During his address at the UN, Zelenskyy called for continued support from countries as Ukrainian troops continued to defend against Russia's advances.
Canada has strongly supported Ukraine, providing over $1 bn in military assistance and a temporary safe haven for those affected by the violence. Additionally, Canada recently contributed $33 mn towards air defense missiles and has pledged $500 mn in aid. With their most recent meeting at Lithuania's NATO summit, Zelenskyy and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau have maintained regular communication.
The NATO leaders expressed support for Ukraine's potential membership in the alliance, although no immediate invitation or timeline was provided, causing frustration for Zelenskyy. Zelenskyy is also expected to speak at a UN Security Council meeting about Ukraine, where Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov will be present. Before he visits Canada, Zelenskyy will meet with U.S. President Joe Biden at the White House as Congress debates Biden's request for military and humanitarian aid for Ukraine.
