In response to the recent legal action initiated by Kyrgyzstani authorities to close down Kloop Media Public Foundation, an independent non-profit media organization, Amnesty International's Maisy Weicherding, who specializes in Eastern Europe and Central Asia research, voiced her concerns about the implications for freedom of expression and human rights in Kyrgyzstan.
Weicherding says that Kloop Media plays a vital role as an independent voice committed to delivering fact-based reporting on the human rights situation in Kyrgyzstan. She emphasized that the attempt by Kyrgyz authorities to shut down the organization represents a concerning regression in the realm of freedom of expression and human rights for Kyrgyz citizens.
The lawsuit, filed by the Bishkek City Prosecutor's Office, seemingly targets Kloop's critical journalistic stance. However, Weicherding pointed out that the right to freedom of expression, as enshrined in Kyrgyzstan's Constitution and international human rights laws, necessitates enhanced protection for political expression. Media outlets, as watchdogs, should have the space to offer critical perspectives on public officials without facing repression.
"The authorities’ unrelenting repression of freedom of speech and expression, including the targeting of journalists and government critics, and the crackdown on peaceful protest risks canceling out the positive strides that have been made on human rights in Kyrgyzstan in the last few decades," says Weicherding.
Amnesty International is calling on Kyrgyz authorities to withdraw the lawsuit immediately, allowing Kloop to continue its crucial role in promoting truth and human rights in the country.
