The Prime Minister of Kyrgyzstan, Akylbek Japarov, has issued a stern warning to government officials, threatening immediate dismissal if any accidents occur during the upcoming heating season.
According to president's press service, Japarov emphasized the need for thorough winter preparations, stating:
"I don't want to hear any excuses that winter came unexpectedly. Preparation for winter must be at 100%. If a situation similar to what happened in Mayluu-Suu last year repeats itself, you won't even make it to your office before being fired."
In January of 2022, authorities declared a state of emergency in the city of Mayluu-Suu in the Jalal-Abad region. Harsh cold weather had caused water pipes to freeze, disrupting the water supply to the city's power plant and halting heating services. Consequently, over 1,800 residents of apartment buildings were left without heating.
The Prime Minister also instructed officials to conduct public awareness campaigns regarding electricity conservation. He stressed that every citizen, especially government institutions, must be prepared for the heating season.
Last week, Japarov had already urged the citizens of Kyrgyzstan to use electricity conservatively due to an anticipated energy shortage during the winter, caused by low water levels. He mentioned ongoing construction of new hydropower plants in the country and requested the population's patience for the next three years.
Kyrgyzstan's Minister of Energy, Taalaibek Ibraev, who was also in attendance at the meeting, stated that preparations for the upcoming autumn-winter season are progressing as planned. He assured that there would be no widespread power outages across the country.
