The UN in Kyrgyzstan is concerned about provisions in bills related to NGOs and the media, 24.kg reports.
Antje Grawe, UN Resident Coordinator in the Kyrgyz Republic, expressed these concerns during a roundtable discussion on "Freedom of Speech and Human Rights in Kyrgyzstan." She emphasized that the provisions in the bills do not align with international agreements signed by Kyrgyzstan.
The proposed laws on NGOs and foreign representatives would limit non-profit organizations' rights to carry out development projects in the country, posing challenges for NGOs, especially in regions where they support vulnerable groups. The NGO law contains ambiguous language that could result in unfair treatment for service organizations, and access to information is a key concern.
"These rights and freedoms are the cornerstone of freedoms and human rights. It is important for media, journalists and bloggers to have the right to disseminate the facts that need to be broadcast, to show the most vulnerable people. Achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals in the Kyrgyz Republic requires not only close consultations with civil society. They are based on the important role of civil society, which would allow the development of rights with dignity. Legislative provisions, if passed in their current form, will inevitably limit civil space and society", concluded Antje Grawe.
