The Parliament's Committee on Procedural Issues and Regulations has verified the legitimacy of the signatures from a sufficient number of deputies, allowing the commencement of impeachment proceedings against President Salome Zourabichvili in Georgia.
The ruling "Georgian Dream - Democratic Georgia" party initiated the impeachment process against President Zourabichvili, citing her unauthorized foreign trip on August 31 as the reason. Irakli Kadagishvili, a deputy from the "Georgian Dream" party and the chair of the parliamentary committee on procedural matters, argued that President Zourabichvili's collaboration with the "radical opposition" is detrimental to Georgia's European integration efforts. In contrast, the presidential administration holds a different viewpoint.
Kadagishvili emphasized that the decision to begin the impeachment process is rooted in the president's alleged violation of the Constitution, particularly in her failure to adhere to constitutional requirements while executing her representative duties. He contended that the president should collaborate more closely with the government.
If the Constitutional Court confirms the president's breach of the Constitution, the parliament will review the court's findings within 10 days. Subsequently, a decision must be reached within 30 days to submit the matter to a parliamentary vote, as outlined in the law on impeachment procedures. If a majority of deputies support it, the issue will proceed to a vote.
