During a meeting in Tbilisi, Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili and Israeli Knesset Speaker Amir Ohana discussed the various areas of cooperation between their respective countries.
One area of particular focus was the economy, which has been rapidly growing. According to media reports, both sides expressed enthusiasm for deepening their cooperation in this field, and the Prime Minister noted that a free trade agreement between Georgia and Israel could open up exciting new opportunities for both nations.
Ohana also met with the Georgian Parliament's Chairman and will welcome Georgian legislators to an upcoming plenary session.
Ohana's visit began with a visit to the David Baazov Museum of History, where he emphasized the strong relationship between Georgia and Israel and praised Georgia's positive treatment of its Jewish community.
"The 2,600-year-old connection between Georgia and the Jewish people has become a true relationship between our two countries, and we have come to demonstrate these relations between the [two states] parliament’s as well”, he said.
Ohana pointed out that even after 80 years, the Jewish community still remembers the few righteous nations who preserved humanity and saved Jewish lives during the darkest times. He specifically mentioned Georgian Sergo Metreveli as one of those individuals.
Georgia and Israel share diplomatic, commercial, and cultural relations. The two countries established formal diplomatic relations on June 1, 1992.
Georgia has an embassy in Tel Aviv and a consulate in Jerusalem, while Israel has an embassy in Tbilisi.
