The vibrant city of Almaty, Kazakhstan, came alive with cinematic excitement as the eighth BAIQONYR International Film Festival commenced on September 7. Running from September 7 to September 10, this year's festival promises to be a celebration of creativity and talent in the world of cinema.
The BAIQONYR International Film Festival, known for its unwavering commitment to nurturing young, gifted filmmakers, stands apart for its remarkable resilience without relying on state financial support. This festival has been a platform for emerging talents from Kazakhstan and around the world, spanning regions from Tbilisi to Yakutsk, and from Tashkent to Lisbon.
The festival's grand opening featured a screening of "Brothers" by Darkhan Tulegenov. This full-length debut film has already garnered international recognition, including a special jury prize at the esteemed Oldenburg International Film Festival in Germany. "Brothers" is eagerly anticipated for its release later this fall.
Mikhail Kulunakov, another filmmaker who has previously participated in the festival's short film competitions, will also be featured in an out-of-competition screening with his film "The Trail."
BAIQONYR offers two main competitions: an international feature and documentary short film competition showcasing 18 movies from six countries, and a national competition featuring 20 films.
In addition to the main festival, the Almaty Animation Festival, a separate event under the BAIQONYR umbrella, promises to be a highlight. This festival will host a main contest with 21 films from four countries and one co-produced by Russia, France, and Canada. Furthermore, it will present an international competition of student-made animation films, showcasing 23 captivating works.
The out-of-competition program is equally compelling, featuring the second forum of film experts and film critics from the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS). This gathering will bring together over 20 participants from various countries and will include lectures by renowned masters, roundtable discussions on pressing topics in the film industry, and presentations of innovative projects.
A special project on Korean-Kazakh animation is set to captivate audiences on September 8 with the Bucheon International Animation Festival, offering a unique perspective on the dynamic world of animation.
As the BAIQONYR International Film Festival continues to champion emerging talent and international cinema, it reaffirms its position as a crucial platform for creativity and innovation in the world of filmmaking. This year's festival promises to be a memorable celebration of the art of cinema, showcasing the diverse voices and stories that enrich the global film landscape.
