Reports are emerging of an alleged IS hunt for former Afghan President Hamid Karzai, as journalist Bilal Sarwari provides insights into the security measures taken around him. The Taliban, who now control Afghanistan, have reportedly restricted Karzai's movements, preventing him from leaving his residence even to visit the mosque. This measure is said to be in response to a warning from the GUR unit, responsible for his security, about a potential assassination attempt by ISIS, Sputnik Afghanistan reported on August 28.
President Karzai has been prevented from visiting homes of his friends in Kabul, including offering his prayers or wanting to drive in Kabul. Taliban’s intelligence GDI has been telling the former president there is a threat against his life by ISKP. https://t.co/PtnRVfXpHA

Hamid Karzai, along with Abdullah Abdullah, the former head of the Supreme Council for National Reconciliation, and Gulbuddin Hekmatyar, the leader of the Islamic Party of Afghanistan, has been involved in a coordinating council for the peaceful transfer of power since the Taliban's takeover. This council aims to facilitate negotiations between the Taliban and the international community. These three figures remained in Kabul following the Taliban's rise to power, taking on roles as intermediaries in these crucial discussions.
This development raises concerns about the security of high-profile individuals who have played roles in Afghanistan's recent political landscape. The attempted assassination of Gulbuddin Hekmatyar by ISIS in December 2022 serves as a reminder of the volatile security situation in the region. In light of this, the heightened security measures around Hamid Karzai reflect the apprehensions regarding the potential threats posed by extremist groups like ISIS.
