The Public Council of Astana discussed the draft general plan of the city until 2035. One of the topics covered was whether to increase the city's population, which currently stands at just over 7% of the people of Kazakhstan.
For context, Tokyo is home to 11% of Japan's population, Paris is home to 3.3% of France's population, Ankara is home to 6.8% of Türkiye's population, London is home to 13.4% of the UK's population, and Moscow is home to 9% of Russia's population.
Members of the Public Council summarized that it is necessary to develop rural areas and small and medium-sized cities, preventing the relocation of residents in search of a better life in the capital. They support the position of the developers of the master plan, who believe there is no need to strive for population growth, mainly due to migration processes. All regions of Kazakhstan should develop in a balanced way so that there are opportunities to live and work with dignity and receive education and quality medical care everywhere.
By 2035, Astana's population is expected to reach 2.3mn, already exceeding 1.3mn.
The public council recommended approving the draft general plan of the city until 2035, considering the comments and suggestions.
