A state of emergency of a regional scale was declared due to natural causes in six districts of the Zhambyl region in Kazakhstan.
As per Article 48 of the "Law on Civil Protection," the Prime Minister has declared a state of emergency in Baizak, Zhambyl, Kordai, Merken, Turar Ryskulov, and Talas regions. The government is addressing the issue of compensating farmers for losses due to abnormally hot weather and insufficient water supply,
the report of the region's administration reads.
Due to the region's lack of irrigation water and abnormally hot weather, crop losses are expected to reach 25-30% compared to last year.
The government created an interdepartmental working group comprising representatives from various ministries and local bodies, including Agriculture, Emergencies, Ecology and Natural Resources, the Water Resources Committee, and the Zhambyl regional branch of Kazvodkhoz.
The working group visited the fields, met with farm heads, and assessed the situation.
While on a work trip to the region, Prime Minister Alikhan Smailov visited local farmers, assessed the current situation, and suggested declaring a state of emergency while compensating peasant farms. The proposal received support.
The extent of damage to farms will be determined before the end of the growing season. In the coming days, the area of unsuitable fields and the loss amount will be clarified.
Reportedly, the Minister of Agriculture of Kazakhstan, Erbol Karashukeyev, noted the Zhambyl region had been affected by a water shortage from Kyrgyzstan, with 1,200 hectares of sugar beet among the 7,800 hectares damaged.
Earlier, Daryo reported that Kazakhstan's Ministry of Agriculture plans to use water-saving technologies on 20,000 hectares of irrigated land by the end of 2023.
