After just ten days since the announcement of the disappearance of around 2,000 artifacts worth millions of pounds from the reserves, Hartwig Fischer, the Director of the British Museum, has resigned.
According to Euronews, one of the world's most prestigious cultural institutions disclosed the dismissal of an employee linked to theft or damage of art objects, including golden adornments and precious gems spanning from the 15th century BCE to the 19th century CE.
A German art historian stated that the museum administration did not adequately respond to warnings about issues with one of the staff members.
"In the end, the responsibility for this failure lies with the director," states the official statement.
Fischer was originally set to leave his position in 2024. The museum's Board of Trustees, chaired by former UK Chancellor George Osborne, has accepted his resignation.
