A tree of mature age, spanning 61 years, was recently felled during road expansion and bridge reconstruction in the Altynsai district of the Surkhandarya region.
A district chief of police officer had previously approached the Department of Ecology, Environmental Protection, and Climate Change requesting permission to cut down trees. However, the request was ultimately denied.
Despite this, it has been reported that individuals who remain unidentified proceeded to fall two chinars, 54 archives, and several ornamental trees, resulting in an estimated damage of UZS 293.7mn (nearly $24,500).
Criminal proceedings have been initiated in response, and law enforcement officials are investigating the matter.
Earlier, Daryo reported that the Tashkent City Administration is taking proactive measures to enhance the upkeep of the green spaces within the capital of Uzbekistan. As part of this effort, a new initiative has been introduced wherein every individual tree will be assigned a caretaker and a corresponding passport for streamlined management and maintenance.
