Kazakhstan's government has utilized funds seized from corrupt officials to construct 62 new schools in various regions of the country, including Astana, Almaty, and Shymkent.
The new schools will provide over 76,000 student places and are part of the Education Infrastructure Support Fund, established in December last year.
The fund has already received KZT 1.6bn (about $328mn).
Its mission is to address emergency institution issues, eliminate the need for three-shift education, and alleviate the shortage of student places in general.
In May, the Ministry of Education approved the construction of 62 schools designed for over 38,000 places, with the money of corrupt officials for KZT 96.5bn ($208.8mn).
The funds confiscated from corrupt officials will also be directed toward constructing hospitals. This initiative aims to cover the deficit of local budgets caused by the rise in project costs.
President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev has previously instructed that the funds seized in corruption criminal cases be sent directly to the Education Infrastructure Support Fund.
Moreover, the Kazakhstani authorities plan to allocate $150-160 annually to children under 18 as part of the "National Fund for Children" project.
The first money is expected to be transferred to accounts in January 2024.
