Archaeologists discover Bronze Age steppe pyramid linked to horse cult in Kazakhstan

Archaeologists discover Bronze Age steppe pyramid linked to horse cult in Kazakhstan

Archaeologists from L. N. Gumilyov Eurasian National University have made an unprecedented discovery in the steppes of Kazakhstan - an immense Bronze Age steppe pyramid associated with a horse cult. This remarkable find, which has no parallel in the Eurasian steppes, was unearthed during excavations at the Kyrykungir complex monument near Toktamys village, Arkeonews reports.

    Previous discoveries

For years, experts from the Archaeology and Ethnology Department at the Faculty of History of the Eurasian National University have been investigating this site. Previously, their work had uncovered clusters of sepulchral mounds dating back to the Hun (4th-6th century AD) and Saka (mid-2nd century BC to mid-1st century AD) periods. These burial sites revealed an array of mortuary objects, including ceramic vessels, culinary offerings, and intricately crafted bronze beads.

    The pyramid

However, the recent research, conducted in collaboration with ENU students and masters, unveiled a grand-scale steppe pyramid from the early second millennium BC, a Bronze Age structure previously unknown in the Eurasian steppe. This pyramid, displaying remarkable precision and hexagonal shape, is characterized by 13m (9.8ft) and eight rows of stones between each face.

The complex boasts a series of concentric circles within it, while its outer walls are adorned with depictions of various animals, with an emphasis on horses and camels.

    Why is it important?

The significance of this discovery extends beyond its architectural marvel. Uncovered ceramics, gold earrings, and other jewelry suggest that this pyramid was a cultural hub during ancient times. It underscores the profound veneration of the horse, evident through the presence of horse bones around the pyramid.

Ulan Umitkaliyev, the Head of ENU's Archeology and Ethnology Department, explained that the findings reflect the elevated status of the horse cult during that era.

In the broader context, the Eurasian steppe was a pivotal zone during the Bronze Age, characterized by the extensive use of bronze for tools, weapons, and artifacts. This region facilitated cultural exchange, trade, and migration across its vast expanse from Eastern Europe to Asia. The recent discovery sheds new light on the intricate historical tapestry woven across the ancient steppes.
