The first finalist of the Women's World Cup in football has been determined in Auckland, and it's Spain for the first time.
Spain's national team defeated the Swedish team in a match that has been already dubbed as "dramatic" and even "crazy" in the media: the peak of the clash and a series of goals occurred in the very last minutes. In the 81st minute, Salma Paralluelo scored the first goal.
Rebecka Blomqvist of Sweden responded seven minutes later, and immediately after that, Olga Carmona secured the second point for her team. The final score of the match was 2:1.
Sam Ashu from Euronews, followed the tournament and the fans' reactions:
"It's not as crowded here right now, but a little earlier, there was a sea of red and yellow," he comments from the fan festival in Sydney. "Spanish fans won't have to travel far, as the final will take place at the Australia Stadium just a 20-minute drive away. The Spanish team showed true gameplay. Team coached by Jorge Vilda - in defiance of critics - has advanced to the final of the women's World Cup for the first time in its history."
The reigning champion of the World Cup is the U.S. national team, which was eliminated during the current tournament in the round of 16. None of the semi-finalists of this tournament has previously won any world championships.
Sweden is a three-time recipient of the bronze medals at women's World Cups. Spain has never gone beyond fourth place. This is only the team's third appearance in the World Cup.
