Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) and Saudi Arabian club Al-Hilal have reportedly reached a significant agreement that will see Brazilian forward Neymar Jr. transferred for a sum of around €90 mn ($98.5 mn), along with additional add-ons, CNN reported. This proposed deal marks a substantial development in the world of football, signalling a shift in player dynamics and club strategies.
Ekhbariya, a state-owned television company in Saudi Arabia, made the announcement via social media, stating that Al-Hilal had officially secured Brazilian star Neymar in a record-breaking transfer deal from PSG. The post indicated that Neymar would don the iconic number 10 jersey with his new team.
As per reports from Sky Sports, the 31-year-old Neymar is expected to undergo a medical evaluation on Monday, following which the finalisation of a two-year contract is anticipated within the subsequent 24 hours.
In 2017, Neymar's transfer from Barcelona to PSG shattered records with a staggering €222 mn (approximately $243.1 mn) fee, making him the world's most expensive player at that time. However, if the current transfer goes through, PSG will reportedly recover less than half of that fee, highlighting the complex dynamics of player valuations in the football market.
Neymar's arrival at PSG was initially seen as a pivotal move to propel the club to European dominance, notably clinching the elusive UEFA Champions League title. Despite winning 13 major trophies during his six-year tenure, including league titles and French Cups, PSG has not managed to secure the prestigious European title.
The team boasted a formidable trio with Neymar, Kylian Mbappé, and Lionel Messi, yet the trio's chemistry did not translate into success on the European stage. Messi's departure to Inter Miami in Major League Soccer and Mbappé's uncertain contract status have prompted PSG to reassess its strategy, shifting from star-studded signings to nurturing emerging talents.
Neymar's move to Al-Hilal further solidifies the trend of notable football names transitioning to the Saudi Pro League. This wave of transfers, which includes Cristiano Ronaldo, Karim Benzema, N’Golo Kanté, Kalidou Koulibaly, Edouard Mendy, Roberto Firmino, Sadio Mané, and Marcelo Brozović, underscores the league's growing appeal and financial muscle.
