The Court of Appeals in Hong Kong has lifted certain charges from seven prominent opposition figures who participated in the unsanctioned protests of 2019 against Beijing's influence, Euronews has reported.
Among the 7 people convicted are media mogul Jimmy Lai, Martin Lim, the founder of the Hong Kong Democracy Party, and renowned lawyer Margaret Ng.
Judge Andrew Macrae stated that he is removing charges related to organizing protests from them while upholding the previously delivered verdict regarding their involvement in unauthorized activities.
This decision was prompted by the local authorities' plan to enact a law on extraditing offenders to mainland China, which served as the catalyst for their involvement in the protests.
In June 2019, demonstrators took to the streets, protesting against plans to allow extradition to mainland China. Confrontations between the police and activists escalated in intensity. The proposed legislation was initially suspended and later fully withdrawn, yet the demonstrations persisted for months with demands for complete democracy and an independent investigation into police actions.
