The initiative to establish a "gas union" was introduced by Russia in November 2022, Ministry of Energy of Kazakhstan has reported.
"However, there have been no official proposals from either the Russian or Uzbek sides. Collaborative efforts in the gas sector with these countries have been pursued through bilateral arrangements based on mutually beneficial partnerships."
The ministry noted that since Kazakhstan's gas transportation system has available capacity for transiting Russian gas to Uzbekistan, a plan of actions has been signed between the Kazakh government and PJSC Gazprom for preparing the "Central Asia – Center" main gas pipeline to transport Russian gas to Uzbekistan through Kazakhstan.
Daryo reported that technical preparations are currently underway for the Kazakh section of the "Central Asia - Center" gas pipeline, which will transport Russian gas across Kazakhstan to Uzbekistan. The completion of these preparations is scheduled for October 1.
Initially, the authorities of Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan declined Russia's initiative for creating a "tripartite gas union." However, in January 2023, the energy ministries of Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan signed a cooperation plan with Gazprom.
Furthermore, it was previously stated in Russia that the "gas union" with Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan could potentially expand.
