The State Statistics Committee of Uzbekistan has released data revealing the dynamics of mobile phone imports during the first half of the year, shedding light on the country's mobile device market. In the period spanning January to June, "white" deliveries of mobile phones recorded a noteworthy milestone, surpassing $100 mn in value. The accumulated data showcases key trends and the prominent role of certain countries in the import landscape.
Key suppliers
Uzbekistan's mobile phone imports during the first six months of 2023 amounted to a substantial 1.55 mn units, collectively valued at $107.5 mn. A significant proportion of these imports are attributed to two major countries: China and Vietnam. Together, they contributed to nearly 99% of the entire shipments. China emerged as the dominant supplier, providing 1.38 mn mobile phones, while Vietnam contributed almost 150 thousand units to the Uzbek market.
Among the countries participating in mobile phone supply to Uzbekistan, India secured the third position with 14.2 thousand units. Following India, there were smaller contributors to the market, including Kazakhstan with 2.4 thousand units, Turkey with 1.9 thousand units, and Taiwan with 1.6 thousand units. Additionally, a cluster of various other countries collectively accounted for around 1.4 thousand units.
Comparative insights
In context, the mobile phone import data for 2022 is a useful benchmark. The total number of smartphone imports was approximately 3 mn units during that year, corresponding to an import value of $199 mn. This indicates a decline in imports compared to 2022, albeit a marginal one. The 2022 imports were notably substantial, reflecting the increasing demand for smartphones and corresponding connectivity in Uzbekistan.
While China maintained its position as the primary mobile phone supplier for both years, the secondary players witnessed some shifts. In 2022, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) stood as the second-largest supplier, contributing 247.5 thousand smartphones to the market. However, in the first half of 2023, UAE's contribution was conspicuously absent from the top supplier list. Instead, Vietnam and India secured the second and third places, respectively. Vietnam supplied 217.9 thousand units, and India contributed 185.5 thousand units during this period.
