According to Italian authorities, the coast guard rescued 57 migrants from two boats that sank in open waters last night, Euronews has reported.
Referring to the survivors, rescuers reported that 30 individuals are missing. At present, the bodies of two deceased migrants have been recovered.
A third boat crashed against rocks near the island of Lampedusa. Strong winds and powerful waves complicated the operation to rescue the remaining twenty survivors who were struggling to stay on the reef.
Ignazio Schintu, a member of the Italian Red Cross on Lampedusa, stated that the temporary accommodation facility, designed for 400 people, currently houses 2,450 migrants.
