An Italian man, identified as Giacomo Chiapparini, aged 74, tragically lost his life after being crushed beneath a massive quantity of Parmesan-style cheese wheels, as confirmed by authorities, BBC reports.
The incident occurred when a shelving unit collapsed within his warehouse situated in the Lombardy region. This unfortunate event set off a chain reaction, causing thousands of these heavy wheels, each weighing approximately 40kg (84lbs), to cascade down.
The firefighter Antonion Dusi, who spoke with AFP said that the process of locating Mr. Chiapparini's body took around 12 hours.
Reports suggest that some of these cheese wheels plummeted from a height of around 10m (33ft). A local resident shared with Italian media that the noise generated by the collapse resembled the sound of thunder.
The resulting economic impact has been evaluated at €7mn ($7.6mn).
A neighbor, speaking to Italian media, described Mr. Chiapparini as a person who was notably supportive and generous. Additionally, it was noted that he had experienced the tragic loss of his child many years ago.
Situated in Romano di Lombardia, roughly 50km (31 miles) to the east of Milan, the warehouse held a total of 25,000 Grana Padano cheese wheels, a type of hard cheese that closely resembles Parmesan and is widely enjoyed in Italy.
