Hundreds of supporters of Imran Khan took to the streets in various regions of Pakistan, expressing their outrage at the verdict against the former Prime Minister, as reported by Euronews.
Recently, Khan was found guilty on multiple counts of corruption, resulting in a three-year prison sentence and a fine of 100,000 rupees. Despite this, the protests turned out to be less massive than initially anticipated.
Among other allegations, Imran Khan has been accused of using the family trust fund for embezzlement of budget funds and for personal gain by selling items bestowed upon him during his time as head of the government.
His first arrest took place in May, triggering mass protests across the country that ultimately led to his release.
The second arrest of the former Prime Minister occurred on August 5. However, this time, the protests in his support were not as widespread - at least for now.
Imran Khan's political party, "Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf" ("Pakistan Movement for Justice"), has contested the verdict. It currently stands as the largest opposition force, occupying 30 out of 342 seats in the parliament. Nevertheless, the recent scandal surrounding Khan is likely to undermine its influence.
Following his removal from power, Imran Khan has become the subject of more than 150 legal proceedings, which he claims are driven by political motives.
