On August 5, Uzbekistan received its twelfth shipment of anti-hepatitis C drugs from Egypt, "Dunyo" reports. The delivery included 7,200 "Sofosbuvir-400 mg" drugs packed in 30 boxes, which will be distributed to patients after treatment at the Virology Research Institute under the Ministry of Health of Uzbekistan.
Experts highlight Egypt's significant support in the country's fight against hepatitis C, which has allowed Uzbekistan to save $3mn (UZS 35bn) from the state budget. These saved funds can now be used to increase the scale of population screening for hepatitis, expanding it from the current 10,000 to 1mn people. This initiative aims to identify hidden cases of the virus and ultimately eradicate the disease completely.
The provision of these drugs follows the agreements made during the official visit of the president to Egypt on February 20-21, 2023, and the subsequent negotiations between the health ministries of both countries.
Health officials emphasize that the eradication of hepatitis C by 2030 can only be achieved through widespread population screening and a continuous effort to combat the disease.
The delivery of these drugs commenced on April 29, and it marks the latest step in Uzbekistan's efforts to address the issue of hepatitis C. On July 23, the country received its eleventh batch of anti-hepatitis C drugs from Egypt.
