The Ministry of Energy revealed that Uzbekistan is grappling with a challenging situation in its energy eatsector, leading to widespread planned power outages. In June, the country experienced mandatory restrictions of 34.8 mn kWh of electricity, which surged to 175 mn kWh in July.
Presently, with the transition to the summer season, restrictions stand at 210 mn kWh. The situation arises from targeted power cuts in certain regions for safe modernization and system reconstruction work.
In response to the power crisis, extensive efforts have been made to revamp infrastructure, including the refurbishment of 542 transformer substations and 592.36 km of power transmission lines in Tashkent alone, along with the replacement of nine low-capacity transformers with larger ones. Additionally, new power facilities are under construction in various areas to meet the energy needs of industrial zones and communities.
The soaring temperatures have severely strained continuous and reliable power supply, causing cable damage and transformer failures. The challenge isn't unique to Uzbekistan, as similar phenomena are occurring in other countries worldwide due to the unprecedented heatwave. The excessive energy consumption for cooling purposes further complicates the situation, leading to significant losses in terms of finances and time for recovery after accidents.
To prevent further crises, authorities have resorted to strategic power cutoffs in specific areas during certain hours to ensure the safety of maintenance workers. Nonetheless, consumer cooperation is essential to mitigate the situation. The Ministry encourages energy conservation practices, such as cooling only one room instead of the entire apartment and turning off unused electrical appliances and lights during daylight hours.
Despite the hurdles, the Ministry of Energy remains dedicated to meeting the nation's energy demands. Recent efforts have led to a notable increase in daily, monthly, and annual electricity production, signifying progress in the sector. The Ministry urges the public to comprehend and support the necessary measures taken to address the challenges posed by the current extreme heat conditions.
