Uzbekistan has made a leap in the 2025 Global Sustainable Development Index, rising 19 positions to rank 62nd with a score of 73 points, according to the latest Sustainable Development Report published by the Sustainable Development Solutions Network (SDSN).

The report, an independent annual assessment led by Columbia University Professor Jeffrey Sachs, evaluates global progress toward achieving the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Uzbekistan was recognized as the fastest-improving country in Central Asia and Eastern Europe since 2015, with approximately 45% of its SDG targets either achieved or actively in progress.
An international online presentation of the report was held on June 24, featuring speakers including Jeffrey Sachs, Umid Abidkhadjaev, Uzbekistan’s Deputy Minister of Economy and Finance, and high-level representatives from global institutions such as the African Development Bank, Tsinghua University, the University of Pennsylvania, and SDSN leadership.
During the event, Deputy Minister Abidkhadjaev highlighted Uzbekistan’s comprehensive reform agenda aligned with the SDGs. He detailed national strategies aimed at poverty reduction, food security, social protection, healthcare and education improvements, gender equality, and the transition to a green and digital economy. He also stressed the importance of expanding long-term and affordable financing for low- and middle-income countries through global financial reforms.

“Achieving sustainable development primarily depends on strong political leadership. It is not enough to mobilize internal and external resources; ensuring their effective and efficient use is essential,” Professor Sachs noted.
Both Sachs and Kevin Chika Urama, Vice President of the African Development Bank, praised Uzbekistan’s SDG-focused reforms, citing the government’s strong political will and leadership as key to its success. Particular attention was given to the country’s notable achievements in poverty reduction, which have drawn positive recognition internationally.
Under the leadership of President Shavkat Mirziyoyev, Uzbekistan has enacted a wide range of institutional and structural reforms, positioning the country as a regional example in sustainable development. These efforts have not only enhanced the quality of life for citizens but also elevated Uzbekistan's standing on the global development stage.
