A wooden replica of an ancient Korean ship that once carried emissaries to Japan is preparing to embark on its maiden voyage to Japan. The celebratory event took place in Busan, a city in southern South Korea, to mark the upcoming journey, NHK reports.
Constructed in 2018 within South Korea, the wooden replica will depart from Busan on August 1 and sail towards Tsushima city in Nagasaki Prefecture, tracing the historical sea route taken by the emissaries in the past.
During the Edo Era of Japanese history, from the 17th to 19th centuries, envoys representing the Korean Dynasty frequently visited Japan, making a total of 12 visits.
Otsuka Tsuyoshi, Japan's Consul-General in Busan, emphasized that the Korean emissaries symbolize a strong and enduring bilateral relationship between the two countries. Excited visitors had the opportunity to explore the reconstructed ship and expressed their hopes for increased exchanges between the nations, inspired by the historical envoys.
Upon its arrival in Japan, the ship will participate in a local festival held in Tsushima. This momentous voyage aims to commemorate the longstanding connections between Korea and Japan through historical maritime diplomacy.
