Kazakhstan's First Deputy Foreign Minister, Kairat Umarov, has called for the consolidation of international efforts to aid Afghanistan and address the nation's complex humanitarian crisis. The plea was made during a meeting with the United States Special Representative for Afghanistan, Thomas West, in Astana.
The C5+1 special session on Afghanistan was convened on July 27-28, with the participation of Kazakhstan, the Kyrgyz Republic, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, and the United States. The key topics discussed during the session included the provision of humanitarian aid to the Afghan people, the protection of human rights, international cooperation, security, and counterterrorism measures.
First Deputy Foreign Minister Umarov presented president Kassym-Jomart Tokayev's initiative to establish a UN Regional Center for Sustainable Development Goals for Central Asia and Afghanistan in Almaty. The proposed center aims to foster cooperation in socio-economic and trade investment development, benefiting both the Central Asian region and Afghanistan.
During the session, Talgat Kaliyev, Ambassador-at-large of the Kazakh Foreign Ministry, stressed the significance of a unified pragmatic approach to stabilize the situation in Afghanistan. With the country facing a severe humanitarian crisis, coordination and cooperation among nations are vital to find effective solutions.
The United States expressed its appreciation for the proactive measures taken by the Kazakh government to assist the Afghan people, especially efforts to stabilize the country's social and economic conditions. The involvement of regional partners, like Kazakhstan, is considered crucial in tackling the multifaceted challenges faced by Afghanistan.
What is the C5 +1?
Established in 2015, the C5+1 platform serves as a diplomatic forum facilitating interaction between the five Central Asian countries and the United States. It fosters cooperation in various fields, including trade and economic interests, thereby strengthening regional ties and addressing shared concerns.
The situation in Afghanistan remains a pressing global issue, with humanitarian needs, human rights concerns, security challenges, and counterterrorism efforts requiring urgent attention. Kazakhstan's call for united international efforts and its proposed establishment of the UN Regional Center for Sustainable Development Goals exemplifies the nation's commitment to addressing these critical matters.
