At the Russia-Africa Summit, President Vladimir Putin made a commitment to provide grain free of charge to six African countries within the next three to four months, Euronews has reported.
This pledge came amid concerns over the country's exit from the grain deal. The summit, held in St. Petersburg, was attended by leaders from 17 countries and delegations from 49 African nations.
President Putin reassured his partners about grain supplies, which had been at risk due to Russia's withdrawal from the grain agreement. He announced Russia's readiness to send 25-50 thousand tons of grain to needy African countries over the next three to four months, as reported by Russian news agencies.
On a different note, Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu strengthened military cooperation during his visit to North Korea. He met with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un and attended an arms exhibition in Pyongyang. North Korea showcased its latest drones and intercontinental ballistic missiles to the Russian minister. In 2022, the US claimed to have information about North Korea supplying artillery shells to Russia through countries in the Middle East and North Africa. However, North Korea denied these allegations, stating they have never supplied weapons or ammunition to Russia.
Meanwhile, in the UN Security Council, two sessions were held to discuss the situation in Ukraine. Russia declined to speak at one of the sessions due to the exclusion of its speaker from the meeting on the situation of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church. The UN Assistant Secretary-General for the Middle East, Asia, and the Pacific, Khaled Hiari, expressed concern over Russia's exit from the Black Sea Grain Initiative and the port shelling, seeing it as a catastrophic development for Ukrainians and the world as a whole.
