Hungary has taken a firm stance against the European Union's proposal to provide €20 bn in military assistance to Ukraine. This opposition was reiterated by the head of the Office of the Prime Minister, Gergely Gouyash. Earlier Daryo mentioned that Hungary's Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade, Peter Szijjarto also, stated that Hungary has consistently refrained from voting on arms supplies to Ukraine. However, he emphasised that as long as Ukraine includes Hungary's largest bank, OTP, in its list of "international sponsors of the war," Hungary will continue to vote against such weapons allocations.
The Hungarian authorities firmly believe that EU funds should prioritise member states and not be directed towards supporting non-EU countries. The statements emphasise Hungary's commitment to its position that financial aid from the EU budget and special funds should be allocated to the country in accordance with established principles.
The excerpt from Gouyash's speech published on the Hungarian government's website on July 27, does not mention the proposed €20 billion military assistance to Ukraine, suggesting that the official mainly addressed issues concerning migrants in the European Union and Hungary's expectation of receiving due payments from the EU. The country's authorities are awaiting funds from the EU budget and special funds after fulfilling the conditions related to the adjustment of their judicial system.
With the proposal from Josep Borrell to increase the resources of the European Peace Fund for military support to Ukraine, Hungary raised concerns about the previously allocated €10 bn for military assistance to the country. The Hungarian government seeks a response from the EU on the allocation of these funds before considering further military assistance.
While Hungary opposes the proposed military aid to Ukraine, they reiterate their support for a ceasefire and peace talks in the region.
