In a devastating accident at the entrance to the University of Johannesburg, two buses collided, leaving 77 people injured, with two of them in serious condition. The incident occurred on July 25 morning, shocking the campus and the local community.
One of the buses involved in the collision was a university-owned vehicle, responsible for transporting students between different campuses of the University of Johannesburg. The other vehicle belonged to the city's public transportation service.
Initial information from Metro Bus spokesperson, Goodwill Shiburi, suggested that five individuals had sustained critical injuries. However, the police later clarified that two people were in serious condition while the rest were treated for varying degrees of injuries at different medical facilities. Both bus drivers were also among those rushed to the hospital for medical attention.
The aftermath of the collision painted a grim picture as one of the buses lay on its side after crashing through a fence at the university's entrance. The other bus, following the impact, collided head-on with a concrete bus stop, compounding the severity of the accident. The incident occurred at approximately 7 a.m., during a time when students and commuters were en route to their respective destinations.
Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department spokesperson, Xolani Fihla, announced that a case of negligent driving would be opened due to the "severity and seriousness" of the crash. However, at the time of reporting, the exact cause of the collision remained unknown and would be subject to a thorough investigation.
The University of Johannesburg, deeply affected by the tragedy, expressed its concern for those involved in the accident. Three students from the university were among those sent to the hospital for treatment, while other students with minor injuries were attended to at the university's medical center. The institution extended support to the affected students by offering counseling services to help them cope with the emotional trauma resulting from the accident.
