An extraordinary meeting of the foreign ministers of the member states of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) has been scheduled for July 31, in response to incidents of Quran burning in two Scandinavian countries, as reported by Iran's Foreign Ministry representative, Nasser Kanaani.
The meeting, proposed jointly by the foreign ministers of Iran and Iraq, has been agreed upon by the OIC, and it will address the issue of desecration of the Holy Quran in Sweden and Denmark. The initiative for the meeting was put forth by Iran's Foreign Minister, Amir Abdollahian, during phone conversations with several Islamic countries, including Turkey and Kuwait.
In the lead-up to the Quran burning actions, protests took place in front of the embassies of Egypt and Turkey in Copenhagen. Last week, Iraqi authorities also called on Muslim nations to respond to the Quran burning incidents.
The situation escalated after protests in Baghdad following the Stockholm police's approval of an event to burn the Quran. In response, the Iraqi Prime Minister, Muhammad Shia Al-Sudani, decided to expel the Swedish ambassador and recall the temporary chargé d'affaires from Stockholm.
On July 24, similar Quran burning actions took place at the Iraqi embassy in Copenhagen.
