In an effort to enhance the ecological landscape and improve the quality of life in the capital city, Kazakh officials have announced ambitious plans to plant more trees and construct a new sewage treatment plant in Astana. The initiative, reported by the Prime Minister’s press service on July 20, aims to increase green space, address water discharge issues, and foster a healthier environment for residents.
During a recent helicopter tour, First Deputy Prime Minister Roman Sklyar, along with Astana's Mayor Zhenis Kassymbek and Governor of Akmola Region Yermek Marzhikpayev, assessed the water volumes of Maibalyk Lake and the Preobrazhensky hydroelectric complex. The tour highlighted the growing demand for water due to the commissioning of a new drinking water station and increased water consumption in the city, necessitating an expansion of the sewage treatment capacity.
To meet the rising demand, the Kazakh government plans to construct a new sewage treatment plant, STP-2, this fall. The facility is expected to have a capacity of almost 200,000 cubic meters of water per day, significantly boosting the city's wastewater processing capabilities.
Moreover, to enhance the green infrastructure in Astana, the city's administration is committing to plant up to 500,000 trees, shrubs, and other greenery in the green belt this year alone. The green belt, spanning an impressive 15,000 hectares, already houses over 11.5 mn trees and 2 mn shrubs, contributing significantly to the city's overall green space.
The decision to increase the number of green belt plantings annually reflects the government's dedication to creating a more sustainable and eco-friendly urban environment. Green spaces not only contribute to the aesthetic appeal of a city but also play a vital role in mitigating pollution, providing shade, and improving air quality for residents.
With these initiatives, the Kazakh government aims to transform Astana into a greener and more environmentally conscious metropolis, setting an example for other cities in the region. The tree-planting efforts and the construction of the new sewage treatment plant are expected to positively impact the lives of Astana's residents, creating a healthier and more sustainable future for generations to come.
