Thailand's Constitutional Court has ordered a temporary suspension of prime ministerial candidate Pita Limjaroenrat from parliament, Al Jazeera reported on July 19. The court accepted a case against him alleging that he was unqualified to run in the country's May 14 election due to his ownership of shares in a media company. Thai law prohibits members of parliament from owning stock in media companies.
Despite the suspension ruling, Pita's election-winning Move Forward Party maintains that it should not affect his nomination for the prime ministerial vote. Rival politicians had sought to block his candidacy. According to Thai law, Pita is still eligible to stand as a candidate for prime minister, but he must leave the lower house and will be unable to vote.
Earlier, Daryo mentioned that despite his electoral victory and the rejection of conservative military rule by voters, reformist leader Pita Limjaroenrat has been unable to garner sufficient parliamentary support to assume the position of prime minister.
